Kentucky Log Cabin Primitive Kitchen This was a project in Central Kentucky. The owner was a doctor and this was his pet project, so there was no real time frame or budget so the detail is incredible. He scoured the country side for parts and pieces, and had some local talented craftsmen, help him put it all together. It is an awesome project inside and out.

In fact, in the kitchen below, the only bare wood to be found is in the flooring—everything else is painted a deep country blue. Yet, it still gives the impression of a rustic inspired kitchen.

Cozy! How About a Country Cabin Kitchen? Country Kitchen with Wood Floor and Open Beam Wood Ceiling. Getty / Compassionate Eye Foundation One niche of the country kitchen style might be called Weekend Cabin, and this one is a prime example of that. This homeowner went big time with the wood–walls, floors, ceiling, beams–but toned it all down by using kinder, gentler woods like pine and white oak. As a result, knots, streaks, and burls are kept to a bare minimum.  This lets the country-vintage elements, like the industrial-chic pendant lights and old-school top-compressor refrigerator, shine brightly. It was important the kitchen be both livable and functional. ‘It needed to be decoratively pretty as well as a working kitchen,’ Emma says. ‘The family wanted it to feel slightly eclectic, so they chose the darker pink as an accent colour.’ The shade picks up on the colour in the tartan stair runner, visible from the dining table.

Work with your property – When your kitchen has proportions like this one in a converted school house, they can easily dwarf any fixtures and fittings. So if your country kitchen is more manor house than maisonette, think big, adding a large table, deep units and a huge range. Even the artwork is enormous in here!

If you want a true country look for your kitchen, consider adding a dry sink stand (dry, meaning that it's unplumbed). No reason, though, you can't add a farmhouse style (apron) sink and plumb it. More likely, you'll use it off to the side as a decorative piece with a copper wash pan. On the top shelf is some room for cookbooks. Underneath, you can store kitchen implements that you use infrequently. This comes from Touches of Country.

Time-worn, aged and chipping paint is essential in any rustic kitchen design.  This is not a look for all those Type A personalities that love a perfect, chip-free home (who can blame them). Instead, it’s a relaxed look that says, “My home is your home. Go ahead, put your feet on the coffee table.”

Holy cow, the dark red and browns in number 1 are to die for. All of these are exquisite, but I am just the biggest sucker 1 and 2. I need wood all over the house, it’s so organic and inviting. This is what I would want in my home and kitchen, not a cold, modern design. Fantastic.

For the floors, slate and limestone, natural wood and tumbled earthen tile all strike the right notes. New-world chic: The range hood in this kitchen is covered in tiny mosaic tiles — a riff on convention, but it works because it approximates the rough look of a more traditional French country surface. The raised detailing on the backsplash enhances the sense of dimension.

Maintaining a functional kitchen work triangle proved difficult when trying to maximize counter space, but the U-shape format helps keep the sink, stovetop and refrigerator in a layout that works.
