Victorian KitchenThis project was the remodel of a kitchen and dining room in a beautiful, rambling, old victorian house in the Mount Tabor neighborhood of Portland. The original kitchen was small, dark, and cramped, with a glassed-in porch surrounding it on two sides so that it had no exterior windows. We converted part of the sun porch to interior space to create a new open and airy kitchen, and opened up the rest to the outside to create a porch with french doors off the dining room. The dining room and kitchen were previously connected by a narrow opening, which we enlarged. A built-in cabinet was removed from the dining room and reused in the new kitchen. The walls are tiled to the ceiling in locally handmade tiles, and we designed tile shapes to surround the stove alcove, including two large curved pieces. The senior designer for the Victorian Kitchen project was Mira Eng-Goetz.Featured inTile Makes the RoomPhotos by Lincoln Barbour

If there is one room that requires important consideration, it’s definitely the kitchen. The kitchen is the room where we interact most with our environment on multiple levels. It has to allow for food preparation, storage, waste management, cooking, cleaning, entertainment and a comfortable place to sit. When designing your kitchen, take no chances. Record all of your wishes, no matter how grand. A kitchen needs to be designed as a custom space, outfitted especially to suit your needs. A well thought out kitchen design, personalized to your needs will make all the difference in how you interact and enjoy the heart of your home.

Unabashedly celebrating an often overlooked space, interior designers and architects understand both the technicalities and the art of transforming the bathroom into a place of beauty. And why not? According to Maximum Performance (MaP) testing, we spend an average of 30 minutes a day in the bathroom: That’s nearly eight days a year. Thanks to new ideas and technology, multi-tasking and functionality has grown by leaps and bounds. From a bathing zone serving two at a time, to a tub providing views of household activities, to fittings that both provide water and air, these six bathrooms leave a resonating, lasting impression for a necessary retreat.
