Materials: Most materials in European kitchen designs are highly processed, including plastic, metal, concrete, and glass. Since these so-called “man-made” materials often feel stark, many designers will incorporate elements from nature including wood veneer and natural stone to bring some warmth back into the kitchen. As a designer, my favorite European kitchens are those that incorporate a nice interplay of synthetic and natural materials. Simple decorations such as a potted plant or a bowl of fruit can also give your kitchen a more inviting ambiance.

Functionality First: Many European kitchens are more condensed than their American counterparts, therefore European cabinets will include accessories and features designed for efficient use of space. These features may include specialized drawer storage systems, pull-out plate racks, organized pantry units, lazy susans, and integrated appliances. The “frameless” construction of European cabinets also yields maximum usable space with very little wasted cubic storage compared to conventional face frame cabinets.

LivingKitchen closes with good results In parallel with the world’s most important furnishing fair imm cologne, international kitchen event LivingKitchen took place this year. After 2011 and 2013, LivingKitchen once again proved to be a powerful attraction. Its strong appeal could be felt not just in Germany, the home of the kitchen, but also far beyond the country’s borders. For seven days, 215 exhibitors from 22 countries showcased their innovative drive, high design standards and quality. With the proportion of visitors from abroad at 45 per cent, the event once more proved to be very international. “We are extremely satisfied with LivingKitchen 2015, in particular with the increase in the number of industry visitors from Germany and abroad as well as the media coverage on the topic of kitchens surrounding the fair. We are hopeful that this will generate positive momentum for the entire kitchen industry”, says Kirk Mangels, Managing Director of the Working Group AMK (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Die Moderne Küche e.V./Modern Kitchen), in summary. This year, LivingKitchen not only followed on seamlessly from its success in 2013, but significantly improved on the key figures in many areas. Innovative presentations by manufacturers, world premieres of new kitchen furniture, household appliances, accessories and cooking shows with a celebrity factor – the outstanding mix of everything connected to kitchens and cooking ensured steady levels of visitors on all days of the fair as well as satisfied exhibitors.

Europeans don't have to worry about lackluster kitchen design, though—they have a habit of turning these rooms into showcases. When it comes to aesthetics, efficiency, and functionality, we'd much rather cook and eat in a European kitchen any day of the week.

It can also contrast beautifully with the sleekness of surfaces like stainless steel, tile and stone. It can add age to a new kitchen in an instant. This stunning European-style kitchen looks decades old, thanks to the planks of reclaimed white oak on the ceiling and island. The planks originally came from a mushroom farm.

With modular kitchens, you can move to a new home and bring your kitchen with you—as long as you live in Europe, anyway. Basically, things like cabinets are connected to a rail on your wall, and they share their design aesthetic with your furniture and appliances. Ikea is one of the few companies that bring affordable, modular kitchens to the U.S. They're far more common in European countries.

2014 is not over yeat, but we can say with confidence that this has been a year of many changes in the European kitchen industry. Big companies are making big moves at home and overseas, long time players are leaving the industry and new ones are entering the arena, instead. We have also lost some companies, to the ongoing recesion, in Europe.

We Americans love us some stainless steel, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. But who doesn’t want more options? Why not banana yellow, Prince purple, or candy apple red? Kudos to European designers for realizing that the kitchen doesn’t have to be the most boring room in the house.

What’s the deal with handles on kitchen cabinets? No, this isn’t a Seinfeld bit—we really want to know. Sure, handles help avoid fingerprints, but c'mon now. This is the 21st century; it's basically the future! Why do we need those primitive aids? Ditching knobs and handles for a flush design lends a clean-cut finish to any kitchen. When it comes to looks, sometimes less is better.
